Recording Kiosk

  • How often do you get to hear your own flute playing?
  • Have you ever wanted to record yourself?
  • Would you like to have a CD of your own music:
    • a “This is My Music” gift for family and friends, or even
    • a commercial product?

We believe that giving you the tools to hear your own sound dramatically improves the quality of your playing. At Flute Haven, we have a straightforward tool to hear and record your own playing: the “recording kiosk”.

Recording Kiosk

Our two, on-site, self-contained recording kiosks let you:

  • Hear your own playing, using high-quality microphones, amplifiers, and headphones;
  • Add and control digital effects (echo, reverb, chorus, etc);
  • Play on top of over 670 background tracks, as well as dynamic background applications running on an iPad;
  • Play in groups including several flutes, plus keyboards and guitars;

And anything you play can easily be recorded with a single button press. Recording are stored directly on your own USB flash drive that we provide as part of your registration. These recordings are studio quality, and you can use them after the event as part of your own CD or digital music album.

Sessions early in the week show you how to use the recording kiosk, and at least one of the two recording kiosks is always available, 24 hours a day, in a dedicated recording room at the retreat center. (The second recording kiosk is sometimes used to record our groups sessions. But when it's not in use, it too is available for recording).

Some Kiosk Recordings from Flute Haven 2014

Here are excerpts from just a few of the hundreds of recordings made this past September at Flute Haven 2014. This is a great example of the diversity of styles by the participants, the range of options for accompaniment, the choices of effects and mixing, and a vast range of player experience (Heidi Kim Nysaether on track 12 arrived at Flute Haven four days prior as a beginner on Native Flutes).

All of these tracks are as they were recorded — aside from trimming these samples with fade-in and fade-out, no other processing was done:

Recording Made Simple ...

But I'm not a tech person … I've never had success with audio gear … I have no idea what I'm doing in front of a microphone …

No problem!! Our approach to technology simplifies the process down to four simple steps:

1. Press the power button. Jam Tracks
2. Insert your USB flash drive
(provided as part of your
Flute Haven registration).
Jam Tracks
3. Adjust the volume of the
microphone to your flute playing.
Jam Tracks
4. Press the Record button. Jam Tracks

That's it!

And to make it even easier, we encourage people to work in pairs. While you can certainly record yourself solo, having two musicians in the room tends to produce a lot more creative ideas and music.

Background Tracks

Thanks to the extreme generosity of a number of artists and record companies that produce background tracks for Native American flute players, we have a wide array of music on the recording kiosk. Here is a grid that shows what is available. If you click on the link in the Source column, you can visit their web site and obtain the music (if you should want to get some experience before Flute Haven with the tracks that will be available).

Color Key
Background tracks that you can freely record over, use for your own personal use, and for creating a non-commercial or commercial CD for sale. However, you may not redistribute the music as a background track without adding substantially to the track with our own playing.
Background tracks that you can freely record over, use for your own personal use, and for creating a non-commercial CD for your own use and non-revenue distribution to “friends and family”. For commercial use (such as placement on a publically accessible web site such as Facebook.com or YourTube.com), you would need to license the tracks from the artist or rights-holder shown in the last column of the chart.

Please note that in all cases, you need to attribute the author of the background track in your recording. Also, any publicity for the author of the background track would be appreciated by them.

Feedback from Past Participants

David Webb, Dakota Windsong Flutes, November 1, 2013:

David Webb in his recording studio

“FLUTE HAVEN 2013 was truly a growing experience for me and in retrospect helped me develop a tenacity and drive to complete my music CD works. I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to Clint, Vera, Eric, Lynn, Ron K, Frank, Ron V, for all of their input, support, encouragement, experience, training, patience and inspiration. Thanks, Eric for the recording studio mentoring and especially the guitar accompaniment on "Love You More" track. My wife Sally loves it. Hope you and your favorite Bamboo Sax are wailing once again in the recording studio. Thanks Lynn Miller for the great backup singing and Ron Kravitz for the awesome percussion support. I also wish to express special thanks to my two recording partners, Lynn Saltiel, who inspired me to be free and fearless and Janalea Hoffman, who taught me to be calm and meditative in my flute presentation.

I was able to compile 16 songs from the many tracks we recorded at FLUTE HAVEN 2013. I am releasing my first cut CD, titled "SPIRIT OF MY FATHER", this weekend at a local art and craft fair benefit November 2nd, 2013.

Now that I am back to the real world, I can reflect on the time and experience of FLUTE HAVEN 2013. I will share my thoughts that were to be my simple but introspective letter to myself, which I believe can sum it up best. “Breath in ... Breath out ... Be Thankful

I wish you all the best for FLUTE HAVEN 2014.
